What the heck IS this thing?

Thinking it was a volunteer Ulmus, I dug it out of a parking lot crack.

It has grown.

The branches come off the main trunk at 180 degree angles. ONLY on the sides. None front or back (?)

And it appears that they do the same thing off the branches. Just sprout to the sides.

Anyone recognize it?

Chinese Elm - I take it back, the leaves are quite serrated. Probably Zelkova Serrata.

What's with the weird branch thing? They look like telephone pole climbing spikes. Does it want to be a FLAT tree?

Wouldn't Zelkova leaves be longer?

90 degree branches is quite normal.

Longer leaves, yes, no, maybe. It's also very similar to a cork bark elm I have - which has quite serrated leaves.

Looks like regular Chinese elm to me.

Give it time, it will have plenty of branches!

They grow that way all year long on the branches, but you should bud on the trunk most anywhere. If you are looking for more branches along the trunk just cut back all the branches to one pair of leaves. It should sprout in three weeks everywhere.

Cheers, Al

I think I'll try that. I have a cork bark elm with the serrated leaves but it sure branches out all around the trunk.

I have a chinese Elm that only shoots on opposite Sides of a branch as it is growing and left alone.

As soon As i Chop it, it will bud back and shoot on all differents si9des of the branch or trunk

ps. It looks exaclty like yours does so think you have Chinese Elm

Looks like Siberian elm to me. Many around here call them Chinese elms. Not sure if they grow out there or not though, they are all over the place here.
