What the Fukubonsai?

I'm sure some you gents have seen this stuff before. I vaguely remember TV commercials for this type of stuff as a kid. There are some pretty gnarly looking jungle trees. Is this the indoor alternative to bonsai?
Any scoop on this stuff? *These guys for real? Looks like some cool houseplant type stuff ($if you bought a tiny one$) but what's the word?

The web site:

Re: What the Fukubonsai?

Checked out the site, must say they feel they have a real good product. I feel they have a fukubonsai. If you like this site, get back to me. I have some real NY snow and ice perfect for watering your Bonsai (not guaranteed to arrive solid, may melt in transit). I can ship to you for a fraction of the cost of your coming here............Jay

Hmmm..... [ hold onto you're wallet during this procedure] If you tilt your head slightly to the right and squint with your left eye a couple of those guys almost look Japanese.

Re: What the Fukubonsai?

I bought a couple of their small scheffleras when we were in Hawaii a couple of years ago. They were pricey but no worse that some of the other nurserys here on the mainland. It looks like they have expanded their line to include larger stuff.

Re: What the Fukubonsai?

I have two of their Scheffs and am very happy with the plants. I would be curious to know what you feel is the major downfall of the website or the product. If you take the time to read the site, Dave Fukumoto is very involved in the art, heart and purpose of bonsai. I think that his product is a very good alternative to the dying juniper "mallsai" that we all may start with. I also think that the dwarf shefflera makes a very nice tropical bonsai. But that is just me and I am not a purist, just a jive rookie. It's like the wine I drink. I drink it because I like it, not because of what it is. Same with bonsai, I am still new enough to this to not know why the Fuku-Bonsai is not "real"

Guys,
I have no douby that David Fukumoto has good intentions and good skills. The thing that is, Well we use the SCHEFFLERA as a house plant around here . You can buy them in the local supermarket.
They tout them as being the super dutiest of all time tropical bonsai. Its just marketing I think. What you have for sale is the best thing in the world, dont you think?

Re: What the Fukubonsai?

Yeah, I have several scheff houseplants as well as my scheff bonsai. Our big attraction was that we could grow these in lower light than normal (i.e. indoor bonsai). These things are what got me started in bonsai.

Seems like a pretty interesting tangent to traditional bonsai concepts. I thought that the website was a little unorganized and sometimes hard to navigate throught. I never did see a page that listed the different types of plants or "bonsait" that they were offering or at least fit the requirements of "true indoor bonsai." Considering at this point in my life I can't dedicate as much time as i think would be necessary for a regular outdoor bonsai I would have liked to see a list of appropriate indoor species.
