What To Do...Wire Incorrect??
Hi all.... so yesterday after much thought, I wired one of my Hornbeams, did a little trim too. Very happy with the trim and most of the wire. Problem is, I think I may have wired up the incorrect branch as the new leader. There were two near each other, one was to be the front branch and the other the apex.
As I look at the tree now I feel I should have used the other as the apex. Assume I am correct in my desire, should I leave this till next spring, or remove the wire and re-bend. Next spring- because I do not feel there is enough time to let the branches set. As for re-bending now, If I remember correct you should not try and bend back and forth any branches do to the cambium breaking..... What's the wisdom ..............

wire
Jay: With wire the longer that you leave it on the tree the harder it is to correct a mistake. The wire by definition sets the tree. So if you feel that you have made a mistake then it will be best to correct it as much as is possible, as quickly as possible. Now the next thing to establish is weather you feel that your mistake truly is a mistake. Remembet that you can always regrow a crown.
sincerely

Jay,
I've done a limited amount of wiring with hornbeams, and from this I've found that they tend to be very forgiving about that sort of thing. I can work them this way and that, and never lose a branch. Try that a hemlock and you've got yourself firewood. So I suspect you can safely reshape now. Best regards, OMC

Thank you both!!!
I must have had a senior moment, and moved the incorrect branch up to be the apex. I will reposition it in a bit. As you said, at worse, I can always regrow an apex. I have been selecting the branches to trim in my mind for about a month. When I was wiring something happened and well..... Thanks for the advise!
