What A Day
Today was a kind of special day for me. A lot of things happened. Most of them very good though I didn't think so this morning.
First off, one of the worst of all possible things that could happen to anyone happened to me. MY COFFEE POT BROKE DOWN and I had to drink that instant stuff. Totally horrible, could only drink half a cup. Mind you I am retired military and like most of them retreads I always have a cup of Joe in my hand. Not today though ! Then I had to sit by the phone all day. I am, as most know, buying a new place. My offer was in and accepted. But I had to wait till I was officially notified. I also had to wait for that dreaded call from the banker on the financing. The calls finally came at 4:30 this afternoon. All this time waiting was, to say the least frustrating. I no longer have any fingernails. As a matter of fact my arms now end slightly below my elbows. Most of the day I was a total wreck. Desperately trying to take my mind off the wait I decided to SURF the web. Believe it or not this is something I seldom do. I pulled up Goggle and stared at the screen for a while. Just what to put in that search block. It is a big decision. So OK I am only a man. Naked girls was on the list but what if my wife caught me .......... Then it hit me: Bonsai! Can't go far wrong there. ;o) I spent several hours surfing. Looked at bonsai from all over the world. Everything from Mallsai to truly great masterpieces. It was amazing! There were literally thousands of pictures of those little trees. Every country, (even Bolivia) every culture seemed to have some bonsai attached to it. They all did, it seemed to me, to have the big three though. The good, the bad and the ugly. Even Japan seemed to have its share of Mallsai. I did learn something though. No country, Japan included, had a monopoly on the true masterpieces. Everyplace had their share. Guess bonsai is now so widespread that like painting it is no longer a one nation kind of thing. Even the US had a lot to offer. Most will say we have only been at it 50 or so years but I guess that must be about long enough. My opinion at least. After all, how long does one have to do anything before they, at least, become proficient at it? Might be a lot will disagree with me on this but then that will make us even. I disagree with them ;o) So now I think of bonsai as a universal art. Practiced by experts from many nations. Something that even the little guy can do and enjoy. Like painting we can all do it. Some better than others but who cares if it is at least a bit of fun. I could be wrong but I like it better thinking that way. To me at least it makes a lot of sense. I did not get a lot accomplished today. But I do think that my mind has been extended beyond the norm. I have learned something that has pleased me a great deal. But mostly I have learned. THAT NEW PLACE IS NOW MINE. ALL MINE. Drinks are on me. Come on over! But, make it quick I am just plain tuckered out and will go to bed before too long. Hi Ron,
You probably don't remember me, but I visited your place this past summer with my wife and two kids, on our way back from Charleston to Hendersonville, N.C. I bought one of your mica pots from you. Like you I was doing a Google search on Bonsai and found this site. While reading through the forums I saw your name and thought it looked familiar! Then I remembered Tokonoma Bonsai, and it finally clicked "hey I've been there" Did you get to the show in Asheville at the arboretum this year? I didn't get to make it ( Oh well maybe next year. Talk to you later.David Ballard

I got up at 6:30 AM, took the new issue of Bonsai Europe to the bathroom for 20 minutes.
Fixed two strips of bacon and an egg. Burnt the toast. Who cares. Looked out the window at the doves trying to think about building a nest under my patio eves. Thought about going to work, but then the earthquake news broke in. Watched that for 2 hours. Went outside and repotted one tree. Got bored. Tired, so I'll check my email and go to bed. I hope this wasn't a rhetorical thread, just thought I should share my day... Al
