What can I grow inside?
Hello all! I am glad I have finaly found a bonsai site with some activity! Now, I am very intrigued by indoor cultivation and have been doing it for some time now. I am very new to the art and world of bonsai and had a question.
I was wondering what types of bonsai trees I can grow indoors under a 400wHPS grow light all year round. The area stays around 80*F and light schedual can obviously be altred. Thanks for any info. |

Tropicals (and occasional subtropicals). You may end up shopping for 'house plants' in the supermarket, or else indoor areas at nurseries, but it's basically what you're going to be limited to.

Well I was thinking that having a VERY bright light that is almost like the sun itself, that it would allow more plants than just the "indoor" or "house plant".

That's good, then your indoor plants won't struggle to survive like most people's do that have normal light. A grow light is not going to match the sun's intensity. So, you need something that will grow under abnormal conditions. If your just beginning, I'd suggest you get a ficus microcarpa (Chinese Banyan) tree.

Yes, sorry but true, many bonsai will not survive long indoors. Even Junipers need cold to reset their clocks. They might live 1 or 2 years indoors and then go belly up. Pines need to be outdoors. Almost all deciduos trees need to lose their leaves and be stored in a cold place until spring.
However, search this web site for indoor trees and you will find a lot of information. Chinese elms can be left out until they lose their leaves and then come indoors for an early start. Keep reading. |

Ficus (any type)
Serrisa Jade (also known as money plants) cactus (not bonsai but desert plants survive almost any amount of central heating) Orchids (also not bosai but I love the flowers - got to keep the humidity up though) |
