Good morning Boys an Girls
First off, I wanna thank you all again for yer replies, comments and help in my first 2 posts. Ya all know how to welcome a person. In the last 2 weeks, I went a bit mad. As well as the 4 Chinese Elms I had, I know have 2 Carmona Macrophyll, 4 Juniper, 1 Ficus Retusa and 1 Serissa. I bought a book (the Bonsai pocket encyclopedia). This is really helpfull with identifying the plants, being as the shops I got them from didnt have a clue. The Junipers are just wee Dwarf trees. I read that you wire an train conifer's at this time of year, so I messed about with them a bit, then put them out doors. Everything else is in our bedroom, so me Girlfriend says it looks like a jungle, and i'm not allowed any more. So, tomorrow, I go in search of ma first Acer. Hopefully a Deshojo, cause I think they are beautiful. I am concerned about buying such a tree, and leaving it out to the elements, cats and kids. Think i'll have to build some kinda wee shelter for ma outdoor collection. I know its the wrong time of year to re-pot, but I had to do the Ficus and one of the Carmona. They were completely pot bound, and saturated. And the Ficus had a white cobweb like mould growing out the drain hole. I had them both a week, and hadn't watered them once, but the soil was still wet. The Ficus lost a few leaves the next few days, but since then, they are both growing new leaves, and the Carmona is still blooming wee flowers. Question:... Is it unusual for the tree's to still be growing at this time of year? Every one of my indoor tree's are sproutin new leaves, some more than others. Saying that,.. I have fed them all bout 2 weeks ago. Got some liquid feed that you give them once a month during the Fall an Winter. Anyway, talk to ya all soon Drunken Last edited by Drunken_Irish : 10-Nov-2005 at 07:09 PM. |

Looks like you have a wee bit of a bonsai addiction Drunken. My girlfriend thinks I'm mad too
You should get her really worried by arranging the trees in your bedroom in a semicircle and start wispering to them like your conspiring against her with them My first mallsai (shopping mall bonsai) has come out of dormancy after I thought I had killed it mainly by putting it in the rong position. I will always have a specail place for that one but don't be too worried about protecting your trees over care can be just as dangerous for them. Morning sun with protection from hot or cold wind and you can't go too rong. I live in a much milder climate than you though I think. If you can get a Deshojo I would go for it. Also that white fungus may be the benificial soil fungus that helps roots get nutrients Regards Brett

Hi Drunken,
Welcome to my part of the world I work in the DY postcode area and live in Walsall, so not too far away at all. Deshojo will be no problem at all. I have two that are just losing their leaves. Just make sure it gets shelter from heavy rains and strong winds. Where are you going to look for stock ? Dai-ichi at Redditch are not too far away. Best Regards, Ian. |

It is not unnusual for "indoor" trees to be growing all the time. The species used for "indoor' bonsai are tropical or semitropical plants that have little, if any, seasonal growth limitations. Always a good idea to feed trees that are in active growth. |

I was tempted to chirp in about the white fungus being beneficial, but i've never kept ficus so don't know. If it is, don't be alarmed, it iss a beneficial michoriza that helps the tree by breaking down organic matter in the soil, releasing the nutrients which the tree can utilise. Bearing in mind, trees are organic matter aswell so the fungus could be eating away at your roots! lol. I doubt it though.
And as for the continued growth of your tropicals, it's fine. Indoors you provide a prety constant environment for your trees to grow in. They won't go fully dormant as the temperature and light they recieve will be similar all year round. I'm going to join in with the "welcome to my part of the world" as i'm in Telford and it aint that far away. Al

Well, I could be wrong in understanding your post, but do you have the junipers inside? They must be outdoors. Junipers are not conifers either (pine trees), but that is just a technicality. My ficus and fukien tea trees (carmona) grow year round indoors. They could use a humidifier if you could afford one. Since you are new, when you prune the ficus and fukien you could take some cuttings for future plants. Enjoy your new trees...

I'll "chirp" in with Al. It is most likely that the white fibery stuff growing out your ficus drainhole was actually a network of very fine roots, which is a good good thing to see!!!
It sounds like you are giving the tropicals good care. Good onya, drunken. pootsie, sober Irish-American |

Evening all
OMG you guys are so helpfull!! I love it here! Big hello to ma new neighbours Ian an Alasdair. I know Telford is near here, and i've heard of Walsall. I havn't been to Reddich yet Ian, but i'll make me way down there some time soon. I'm going tomorrow (with ma hard earned cash) to a nursery in Stourbridge. I just found out about it during the week, so am on an Acer hunt! Its called Beechwood Bonsai Nursery. So, wish me luck, cause i could get lost in me own back yard!! Soltan!, cheers for the girlfriend tips Bro. Have to try that!! She already thinks am mad,.. that might have her phoneing the guys in white coats!! Hiya Godbee... my bad, I thought Junipers were conifer's.... ya live an learn,... but yes, they are all outside. They where outside when I bought em, so thought I better keep em that way. Question... if their not conifers, have I done them harm by cuttin an wiring them at this time of year? Cheers for the advise RockM.. I wasn't sure about the feedin thing. Just followed the instructions on the bottle. So maybe, i'll give them a little bit more while their still growing. I really didn't know they were tropical. I keep em in the bedroom, close to the window, but not in direct sun-light, and they get heat from the radiator, but not directly,.. and because of the heat, I mist spray them twice a day to do the humidity thing. But if I wanna get any more indoor tree's, i'll have to build a greenhouse, or me girl will put me out with the cats!!! Hiya Pootsie.... yer from Ohio!!? I have a friend in Springborough! She told me about the on-slaught of the Cicada's last year. Bet ya had to lock up yer tree's when they came along!!! Me an me kid are big Red's fans!! Sean Casey for mayor!!! (hope yer not a Cleveland fan hehehe). Anyway, thanks again for all yer help an advise,.. cya's later Drunken ![]() Last edited by Drunken_Irish : 10-Nov-2005 at 07:10 PM. |
