Weeping Fig (ficus) multiple trunks
I just got a small ficus called a weeping fig in a small (1/2 gal?) plastic pot. It has several thin trunks. I have thinned the branches and trimmed them off the lower trunk/s, and tried to start shaping it in an umbrella shape.
My question is: How do I start thickening the trunk/s? |

Hi Hotei,
Plant it in a deep tray ( kitty litter size) for awhile.. 5 years ought to beef up the size of the trunks, and let it grow topside also... peace, tom stoute

To thicken your trunks keep as many leaves on the tree as possible. The trees only grow and thicken in proportion to the number of leaves left on the tree. Good luck.

Thank you both. I am curious, though, why (a) planting in a deep tray and/or (b) leaving as many leaves on the plant as possible cause the trunks to thicken.

Ps
Jerry: Whitefish?! My daughter an family live in Bigfork (just outside Bigfork). What kind of bonsai can you do regularly in Whitefish? How do they cope with the winters?

Hotei:
This is pretty basic, but a trunk will not thicken unless the tree grows. The tree will grow more quickly with more leaves and with more room to grow its roots. Keeping the tree in a small container will reduce its growth rate. So will removing leaves. pootsie |

As to figs or any tree thickening requires growth. Growth is helped by leaves, the amount of chlorphyl. These are the energy cells of any tree. The more you have the faster the growth and the thicker the tree. Larger pots, more light, more humidity, more fertilizer also are helpful.
In Whitefish, I grow lots of tropicals indoors and juniper, larch, maple, cedar, fir, limer and ponderosa pin outdoors. Jerry
