rockm,

You're making me remenice....reminesce.....remininsce...remember my old Army days. There was a cadence we sang while running:

"Some people say that a preacher won't steal,

I caught one in the act in my watermelon field;

Eatin' up the watermelon, throw away the rhine,

three-fifty-seven made him want to double time."

Sorry, I'm in one of those moods. It made me laugh anyway.

Perhaps an effective deterrent to stolen bonsai is an unlighted yard cluttered with assorted rakes, lawn sprinklers and water hoses. The occasionial strategically-placed cement garden gnome might even be more effective at crippling a would-be thief than a big dog.

Yeah!! That works!!!!

A nice thorny barberry hedge would help, too. Or bougie.

Ouch!

But he wouldn't have your trees. And those thorn and bruises would be of some solace....

For me the cam is there as much to peek in on our cat when we are away as it is to watch the bonsai. I don't at all think it is a deterrent, in fact I place it to make it less visible. Should the need arise I look at it as a way to identify the theif. The nice thing with this setup is that as soon as it detects motion the e-Mail is sent. Assuming a more serious situation where the thief may go for the camera it would be too late.
