Weather wreaking havoc with trees.
This incessant rain means ...CLOUDS.... all day every day....gloom. This is the time that I usually put EVERYTHING in full "sun" to help keep leaves small.
This year, all the leaves are getting huge to try to get some sun. What to do? Just allow it and then leaf cut in summer? These monster leaves (especially on Japanese Maples) will not put up with the heat and wind without scorching and curling. Sure like to see this rain go away. |

Yeah um..isn't there a rule that people in paradise don't get to complain about the weather unless those huge mudslides are in your yard? You have what an 11 or 10 month growing season there, plenty of time to practice leaf reduction.Usually this time of year I have all my tropicals outdoors by now but we have had snow and freezes throughout March after most everything has been repotted and budded out. Maybe in another 2 weeks they can go out and start their 4 month growing season.

Two hours north of you we had hail. I was south of Sacramento painting the inside of my mother's house. When I came home today one of my elms had three broken branches. The lady watching my trees had artfully tucked them back into the tree. Now they are cuttings. Great weather for indoor painting, not much else!

Over here we have had an unusually cold Spring. You can normally say that by the time the Cheltenham Gold Cup horse race is run the daffodils and crocuses will be out and, indeed, getting past their time. And here we are, almost April and the daffs are just out in the South Midlands, my quinces are only just beginning to leaf. Acers and azaleas are budding and my larches are showing green.
Over the past few days we have had temperatures in the double figures centigrade for the first time this year. It's about time! On the other hand , I have been able to re-pot more trees then usual this year.
