Ahhh! But just what is the right kind of soil?

(I know that I'm getting into religious issues here )

The biggest dig I have heard against automatic watering systems is that they tend to let you skip the inspection of the trees that is a vital part of the whole watering process.

Clearly, there are many top growers who are very happy with their automatic watering systems, but they are also very experienced and have tailored their soil to the way they (or their system) waters. This is the condition we all seek.

Thus, Carl's point is very cogent.

(Carl, I get more respect for you with every post of yours I see! )

For me, the time of greatest risk to a tree is the time just after I get it, when it's in its original soil. Once I repot, things are much easier.

When I first posted this question I thought it would be a good one. Could have been wrong. Think I'll go back to the old drawing board.
I need something easier to write about. I am after all not all that bright ;o(

Bart,
I do water my plants by hand. The only reason why I do this is because I have not found the time or energy to set up an automatic watering system. I must say that I cannot see my plants at all when I am out watering at 5:00 A.M. The only thing that I see are the pots and a dark view of the plant. So, for me, there is no advantage to watering by hand.

The thing that I have noticed the most is that the many people who have automatic watering systems have just as healthy looking plants as the people who do not. Maybe they check their plants for signs of sickness at another time in the day.
