Watercolor bonsai

While cleaning my closet, I ran accross this watercolor painting that I had done in 1986. I don't know what possesed me to paint the bristlecone pines, but here they are. The painting is about 12x16. Just something from my past, a "skeleton in the closet" so to speak.

Re: Watercolor bonsai

Al, this is great!

You have me wondering know if your painting was done based on a photograph or on location.

Ernie Kuo has an interesting Inspirations page on the bristlecone pine area that you can find in bonsaiTALK Links under Techniques-&gteadwood

Thanks for sharing this painting, Al! Can I add it to the Virtual Bonsai folder in the Gallery?

Regards,

Matt

Re: Watercolor bonsai

You never told us you were a painter.
Great work!

I've also painted a literati pine inspired by Deb Koreshoff's book Bonsai - It's Art, Science, History and Philosophy.
If someone's interested, here it is.

Re: Watercolor bonsai

Hi Matt, Yea you can place it anywhere you see fit. This is one that I did that same year. Its the only two that I ever did. This was an exercise in "white" space. 40% of the paper had to remain as white. I chose to model snow. I guess I always loved trees.

Zeb, very nice, Deborah has some wonderfull pics in her book. I really like the pine against the foggy Chinese mountain background inside the cover page.

Soildoc, yes there is something I can't do. GROW A MONEY TREEEEE!

Al,

I stumbled across the posting of your two watercolors when I was following another thread. The breadth of your talents continues to amaze me. If I had but 5% of your talents, I would be a happier man than I am now... and I am pretty damn happy. You continue to inspire me to try just a little bit harder every day.
Enjoy Santa Cruz this weekend.

Dear Group:

Bonsai Al your artistic talents is terrific, and you should follow up on it, (when you have the time). Water color is a wonderful medium and you are certainly on the right track with your renditions.. I definitely like the second painting.....

Maybe, I should not add this picture, but this is a Brazilian Rain Tree that belonged to the Late Jim Moody.

Jim's wife called me after he passed away, and told me how much pleasure this painting brought to Jim, as he rested every day in his favorite chair facing this painting.

Need I say how big the lump was in my throat?

All BonsaiTalk artists,
I love to see paintings and drawings of your bonsai. The talent you all have is enviable and remarkably it evokes images of nature that you'd want to see and the bonsai benches I wish I could have. I don't know how to start a poll , but I bet there are many more great/ capable artists out there in bonsai land who paint, draw and photograph as well as Carl, Rene,Thomas J, Treebeard, Matt, Gillbycantu and now Al. (The first to come to my mind!) Thanks for inspiring us!
