WAR, We Just Can't Help It....
I was playing with the sort button at the bottom of the page. I sorted for the last 100 days, and for the most replies. I got a real surprise when I saw them.
113- The art of Bonsai 90- Auction bashing 76- And now a word on nebari 70- Cruelty to trees 60 -Trees seen through human eyes, Rutledge on design 59- Who are these clowns 52- Faux Auction 50- Is this the most disgusting thing you ever seen. I quickly noticed a theme here. We like to bash, argue, and get in each others face. We like to see who all the ugly mugs belong to, so if we see them in the newspaper for being accused of killing someone, we will recognize them. Any thing with Rutledge in the title is sure to spark some lively debate. Bring up nebari and Rip and I will surly be at each others throat. Who couldn't resist a chance to bash on OMC's little tree, just "for the fun of it". Words like Cruelty, and disgusting, bashing and Faux, makes me want to toss my trees from the nearest window. I tried and I tried and I tried to stay clear, Of any thing that would resound bad in ole Rip's ear. But I am weak, as the whole human race, We try to get our point in, and try to keep pace. Happy Holidays, from Bonsai-al

Al,
How dare you post such an inflammatory, horrible, ignorant thread, why I ought to . . . Geez, there we go again. (I couldn't resist) Happy holidays! Doug

AL:
It's too crowded where you live. I sense frustration in your message. The only answer is to move to Kansas, get a little place in the middle of nowhere (which is everywhere here) and turn off the TV. Here there is peace and quiet, coyotes, an occasional rattlesnake and more deer than you can count. Of course there is a certain lack of amenities like paved roads etc. but, all in all, its a nice place to live. Happy hollidays to all!

Al,
The contention exhibits a healthy wish to be involved in the creation or direction of this wonderful art form. I would view teh lack of controversy as a sign of stagnation, something that bonsai is all together too prone to. Just ask any club that has had trouble getting younger people interested, or new people at all. D.S. |

Guilty as charged
Al,
That was certainly one of the most interesting posts I've read on here in a long time. I've noticed in my own behavior exactly what you allude to in your message. When do I check "new posts" most frequently and eagerly? When I'm embroiled in a heated argument. What does it mean and how does it relate, positively or negatively, to bonsai? I don't know yet. On one hand, this contentiousness seems inimicable to the contemplative aspects that drew me to bonsai in the first place; on the other, Zuishi's point about controversy, discussion, and the health of an art form is very well taken. This brings me to my question. It almost seems as though we suffer from a tension between contemplative practice of bonsai and the artistic pursuit of bonsai. Is this true? Is it unavoidable? Best regards, Old Mister Crow

I think it has become abundantly clear that it is true, but I don't know whether or not it's avoidable in the big picture. Of course, on a personal level, we can all just snip away on our trees in our backyards behind our fences and ignore the hustle and bustle of the community, but where's the fun in that? Debate is a good thing. Disagreement is a good thing. Tension is a good thing. It gets the blood going, keeps your ass from falling asleep, keeps the moss from growing on your back, and makes you reconsider your own personal ruts and prejudices. Maybe it makes some folks feel 'icky,' maybe it creates more questions than it answers, maybe the stress is just too much to handle, but hey, we can always go out and work on or look at our trees, and it all just melts away, right? Calgon, take me away! |

Yes, the discussions and arguments on here do seem to keep things jumping. Keeping one's mind active is a good thing. The arguments are also kind of fun sometimes. I think we all like to "stir the pot" every once in awhile.
Moss on our backs? Hmmm...might be a good look! ![]() |

A sad thought.
For me, the ariguments have nearly driven me off of the forum. I will use Al and myself as the example. I am a grower and realy concerned with the trees foundation, roots and trunk line. It is my goal to create the best foundation that I can. Al wants a curved trunk and branch structure to work with so that he can finish a tree. You see that we should fit together like Santa clause and Christmas, sadly this is not the case. I constantly hear people on this forum and elswhere say that they want to raise the bar on the quality of pontensai that is avalible to the artest but in the next breath it is said that good bonsai should only cost $35.00. Some how these two concepts don't mix. Maby this year instead of constantly bashing one another we can work out how to take the best Ideas that each of us has to create better trees.
