Visit And Bring A Tree To Ben Oki

I get to meet with and bring a tree to Ben Oki this weekend and have a few questions and I'm sure several of you have met the great man and seen his demos.
What type or species do you recommend ? (and please don't say black pine because i can't find good pre-sai stock)
Should i bring raw pre-sai stock, or something i've been working on ?
Any do's and don'ts around him ?

Ben is not only a good teacher but a good man.
Bring something that you have been working on. But be warned you will probably go home with something severely pruned ;o)
You will be glad you did.

A very similar discussion is going on in the REC.ARTS.BONSAI forum. Some suggestions there, too:

Ben is a great person to work with. He is still looking incredibly fit and trim for his age. Was anyone aware that Ben is a Hiroshima survivor? His younger brother was lost in the blast, and Ben nearly lost his life going into the city looking for him. What a fascinating man.

I can't think of anything he would take offense at. I suggest you go prepared to laugh, and ask him about mica and plastic pots in relation to the word bonsai.

A few years ago Ben stayed with my recently deceased teacher while he held workshops in the area...... I didn't get to meet him but my teacher said he had a wonderful sense of humor and complained that when people met him, they thought he was a Navajo....

Don't want to rain on anyone's parade but Ben was a good friend of John Naka. With what has happened I would not be surprised if he didn't make it.
Could be wrong because Ben does have a strong work ethic.
