A Visit Across the pond

Well every other year, my wife and I take a trip. This coming year we will be visiting England. Our plans are to arrive March 27 and remain till April 14. As you can imagine, I wish to include Bonsai in my visit. Also as you can imagine I am NOT the final say on what we do.

We will be visiting my wife's sister, who is living an hour or so north of London. We would like to include a trip to Scotland and possible Wales and Ireland. We will also take the train to Paris for a day or three.

So my question to the group is during the time I'm across the pond, is anything going on that I should push to do? Are there any sites (Bonsai or other wise) that are a must do?

I realize it is a bit early but we just finalized our flights and I figured it never to early to plan. As a note, we both have visited England before. However, we were limited to London, Stonehenge and Bath.

Hope my friends across the pond are able to help

Jay

Hi Jay,

Great to hear you and your wife are coming over.
An hour or so north of London sounds VERY close to me

I'll send you a PM over the weekend, since I can certainly recommend a few places for you to visit Bonsai wise. All the tourist places will probably be well covered by your sister-in-law, but to do all the places you list will give you a bit of a hectic schedule - even over 3 weeks.

Apart from London, there are so many places you could visit.

Oxford, The Cotswolds, Stratford on Avon, The Lake District, North Wales,
Devon & Cornwall, Norfolk, The Highlands of Scotland, Dublin etc..... would be all be on my list to give you a taste of the variety in the British Isles.

Look forward to hearing from you soon - we may even be able to meet up for a Drink and a bite to eat.

Best Regards,
Ian.

Ian, sounds great... looking forward to hearing from you.

We realize that we may have set the bar a bit high on our places to visit. But as our trip gets closer we will undoubtedly refine the list... adding one or two and removing quite a few.

Good advise to yourself Jay, when you try to do too much, it lessens everything, and you don't get to truely enjoy where you are at. Understandable to try, but think of it as an exploration to see where you want to do a good visit down the road.

If that didn't make sense, think of it as not seeing the forest through the trees.

There that made it bonsai related.

I'm jelous by the way, have a great trip.

If you are just staying in England, then the Lake District (NW) and Cornish coastline (SW peninsula) are the best places in terms of natural landscapes and bonsai inspiration. If you choose to venture into Wales, there are several stonehenge type structures and 100s of castles, and the wye valley/Afon Gwy on the border, where I'm from, is especially beautiful. Scotland would be a bit of a trek, but it's worth it for the culture. I've never been to Paris on the eurostar train, but I've been around Brittany and it's a really nice place to go, especially with all the duty free products

Have a good holiday, and bring a coat!
