Uses for a dead bonsai

I have just lost my second bonsai this year ( still in upset over Swampcypress…sob).

This one is,nt so bad as I have two more pine bonsai. But it does seem very strange that it should die because the others were planted at the same time from seed (courtesy of a local school) & it was looked after exactly the same as the others.

This is where I now point out that my hubby has just got back into sculpting & painting miniature pre 18th century soldiers. He has won awards in the past for many of his figures

& it’s a lot cheaper than the other hobby..Astronomy

Now here’s where I’ve got a bit suspicious because he just happened to ask me if I had any dead bonsais for his diorama.

Those of you who are easily upset look away….He cuts the trunk off so there,s only an inch or two left & leaves some of the roots exposed !

As I look on in horror he tells me “You won’t forget that one now”

And yes there are some old dioramas with my dead bonsai on.

Hi Caro,

One man's loss is another man's gain. At least the dead tree will be part of an artistic composition, albeit not the one it was probably expecting lol. BTW, are there any pictures of the said diorama?

All the best,

Aaron

He will take a photo of a previous figure when he gets a bit of time (10.15 pm here)
so it might get done over the weekend. He,s not sure what he,s going to work on, he wanted to do one from one of the crusades with the Knights templars but it,s
difficult to research as there were many different types in other countries as well & he wants to get it right cos there are many who will find fault if they can.

I agree with what was said by Aaron. The at least the tree will continue to appease someone else for artistic reasons and all is not gone to waste. This past semester I made a lost wax aluminum casting of a Ficus Retusa that unfortunately was neglected by parents when I studied abroad for three months. The main trunk of the tree now stands in aluminum and I added some other branches and human-like qualities were added with the wax. I believe that doing a cast will at least permanently preserve the Retusa in its days of glory.

Warm regards,
Troy

Exclamation WARNING dead bonsai: not for the faint of heart

The first two images are my waste-not use of the Ficus Retusa trunk to create a somewhat figurative form, using wax as a medium. This figure is currently now cast out of solid aluminum.

The latter two images are that of a clay form, now cast in aluminum. However I incorporated actual tree branches that cast fairly well when the process was over.

LMAO That's funny.

And Calypsonebula, that's some nice sculpting, but I wish there was more detail on the back of the human sculpture, especially around the butt region.

The transition of the detail from vague to finished looks about right to me. He's very cool. The hands on the tree are less successful.

It looks like you are using a brown oil clay... try mixing in some foundry wax. It makes it a little harder, so you can work without an armature on smaller things like these hands, and get crisper detail, yet without needing special tools.

You have to melt them both to mix them, using a double boiler or a tin can sitting in a pot with some water in the bottom. Be careful about breathing the fumes.
