Unavoidable potting of pines..
I came across a nursery today that had a slew of 1-2-3 year old 5 needle pines (probably strobus) just sitting/lying mashed together in a pile, some with no pots at all, or broken (plastic) ones. I thought that for $4.00 ea. I had little to lose by rescuing a couple, one with no pot at all, but growing horizontally with a little new branch low down, and another with great movement, lots of branching and a pot in pieces. I did nothing to them but put them in pots with some of their soil, and a good dry mix that I made, and will try to keep them somewhat shaded for now. Is there any hope, or did I waste my time? Thanks.

If you did it for bonsai then 3-year-old Pinus strobus is probably wasted time. But I do think the trees might survive. That's my opinion, but here's another from a fan of Eastern White Pine. Keep in mind thought that the article appears to be illustrated with collected material, many decades old:

Hi Matt, Yes, that article and trees were Jerry's, and I don't think anyone in TBS collected as many pine as Jerry did over the years. Mostly Pitch, Jack and White. He had an article on Eastern White Pine in Bonsai, Journal of The American Bonsai Society, Spring 2OOO. Of these three pines E.W. pine is the most difficult. I bought a number of Jerry's pines before he retired to the Czech Republic and he was a good bonsai friend. Hasaki |

Hi Rima, There is hope as long as they did not completely dry out for too long. In my experience one should be careful in watering Pinus strobus as they do not like wet "feet". ![]() Hasaki |

Well, thank you Matt anyhow, I'll keep my fingers crossed. That article was great... will keep it for future (if there is one). W. pine are rampant here, so they may have a tiny chance, plus I also think they are gorgeous.
