Unappealing species
Is there a type of "bonsai" material that you avoid simply because it does not appeal to you?
I'm not very interested in Portulacaria or natal plum. The point of this thread isn't to thrash the reputation of any species; rather, just the opposite. Perhaps through discussion I will gain a greater appreciation for underrated types of trees.

I'm not a big fan of horse chestnuts. Cuts seem to take forever to heal, leaves never reduce very well, and I've never seen one I liked very much...

Not A big fan of most tropicals,...maybe because I haven't worked with them very much. But they seem to not ramify as well in general.

I don't know about that, have you seen some of the ficus etc from Taiwan on the IBC site. I too don't like tropicals but thats just because I don't have the facilities or time to provide proper winter care here. If it can't take a winter on the ground with minimal care, then I don't have it. My real problem tree is bald cypress, I just don't like them. OK the flat top ones look better but still look like a tree on top of a fence post (just kidding). Time to duck and run for cover now ![]() |

This is a bad photo of the tree in general but...
Give em a try Zen I think you'll be pleasently surprised in the future. I'll post some pics of tropicals with fantastic ramification when i get home next week. Happy growing tropicals mate Tai ![]() |

Taipan, that is definitely unappealing. How can you stand to have it around? I'll take it off your hands for you.

i am with ian on the bald cypress. while the trunks are impressive, it just gets old. they all end up looking the same. to me, no appeal there.
