Two plantings stolen from 2007 ABS learning seminar...
These two plantings were stolen from me at the 2007 ABS learning seminar (Bonsai at the Beach, Cavalier Hotel, Virginia beach, VA). I am absolutely crushed, and nobody capable of doing anything seems to care. Please contact me if they cross your path sbellows(at)cox.net
I am very disappointed in the response from both the fancy hotel they were stolen from and the ABS folks... Bonsai, to me, will never be the same. Edit by Mod: Please replace (at) with @ if you wish to contact. Last edited by Ian_Homer : 7-Jul-2007 at 01:50 PM. Reason: Edited e-mail addy for Safety |

I am so sorry about your plants! You must feel just awful. Because we nurture these plants like we do and work our holidays around them, and watch each branch grow and leaf unfurl, it is like they are our children.
I am sure that the likelihood of getting them back is slim, but maybe they will be replaced by something even better in time. |

I am very sorry to hear of your loss.
What were the circumstances of the thefts? Were they stolen from the exhibit hall under the watth of docents, left unwatched for some time in a public place, or stolen from your room? I am on the exhibit comitee for the ABS symposium next year and want to know how this happened so that it can be prevented next year. Kind regards, Jim |

That's a bummer, Abe...hope against all odds that you get your bonsai back.
However, realistically, I hope the guy who stole them has them devoured by his horse...or by his billy goat... Seriously...manysomething years ago, I had a Shohin Oak stolen from a County Fair display. It was, of course, very small, and easily reached and stuffed into a coat pocket or purse. Security around the display ranged from intermittant to zero. That makes it a dumb on me. This bonsai, incidentally, won a blue ribbon for "best of category"...this was before I even knew what a shohin was. Pat

I have not much time to replay, but want to say how sorry I am! No way that we would show our bonsai in Europe in a venue that had no proper insurance in case of theft or accidents during the show! A organiser or a Hotel like this should be insured for things like this! Bad Hotel and bad organisers!
The last one that tried to steal something at the Ginkgo award was caught, and had to walk around the show with a sign around his neck saying: I'm a thief! And the thief's from your bonsai...well I hope he or they recover quickly from the nasty accidents I wish for them! I am so sorry for you, Hans.

So sorry to hear about this, The hotel must have insurance hound them to death till you get satisfaction. Maybe we could start a boycott and force them to at least pay something. I know this dosn't replace the stolen art but it is something

Sorry for your misfortune. We had something like this happen in Florida at the BSF convention and it was disturbing.
In regards to the insurance a stolen tree may not be covered. At some venues the venue itself does not insure anything except "slip and fall" type coverage. This is to protect the venue and it's guests. I can almost assure it is up to the renter to procure proper coverage for things like theft and damages. I can bet that some insurance was obtained but someone would need to review the policy to make sure things like this are covered, and what the deductible may be. Some deductibles are $5,000 per occurrence so unless the theft totaled over $5,000 the pay out would be nil. Some policies require that bonded security contractors be present either during the show or at least during the off time to assure that the space is secure and that nothing is stolen. Based on the cost of the extra security or additional theft rider on a policy I would think that the organizer of the event would be responsible for this type of loss. It would be financially better for them to simply pay out of pocket for loss via theft than pay a deductible or pay for coverage to cover theft.
