Trunk Thickening
I have a 20" weeping fig that is doing very nice, but the trunk is very thin. I was wondering if anyone had any tricks to thicken a trunk of a fig and also give it some arieal roots. any help would be great!

Re: Trunk Thickening
Hello Troy,
I'm just as interested in your question too. Would you have a picture of your fig? I do find them very tough. They can have a lot of abuse and still grow. I enjoy mine because I can keep on pruning almost every third week - a leave here... a couple of leaves there... Regards, Eric |

Re: Trunk Thickening
Guy,
lucky for you the ficus family is one that thickens well naturally. That is a really nice benefit to growing them. I have found one thing that help it along though. When you repot cut up under the trunk deeply. Make what is like a birdsnest out of your roots. When you repot in the training pot plant it on a little mound and stretch out the roots as far and flat as you can. leave a little of the upper part of the root exposed to the air. The surface roots will turn white and thicken in turn thickening up the trunk.

Re: Trunk Thickening
Hey good advice! I have also seen wire rings put around the base, tight, but not constricting. This is somehow supposed to help the trunk thicken a bit faster.

Re: Trunk Thickening
Yeah... but the bark on most ficus is tender and easily scarring. *So be careful of tight wiring and poking, save those for your black pine or a noisy neighborhood dog.
Oops sorry Dog lovers I meant Cat. ---B
