Trunk Healing for a Yew

I have a Yew that I removed alot of the lower branches for. I am currently trying a wound sealant to try and speed up healing. Does anyone else have any methods to speed up the healing process. I just bought a book that suggests wrapping spagnum moss around it and keeping it moist for a few years, has anyone heard that one?

EDIT: The base is about 3.5 inches just above the roots.

Re: Trunk Healing for a Yew

Hi There Literati,

Here are some ideas for reworking the wounds of conifer trees like Yew and Pine:
[*]Make the shape of the wound a little more natural if you make it more teardrop shaped, as if a branch were torn off. [*]Treat the wound area with a little lime sulfur to turn it white and preserve it[*]Join nearby wounds (as on the root) together to make a longer, more naturally shaped wound.[*]Shape the wood to give it some texture[*]If you have the opportunity, in the future, leave a stub on a branch like this 2-3 times the diameter of the branch. You can work it into a snag and create a feature instead of a scar.

In terms of accelerating healing, take a look in the TreeBay Bonsai Tools & Supplies articles under wound treatment. Opening the perimeter of the wound with a sharp knife will help.

Regards,

Matt
