Trunk chop on LARGE ficus

Hey everybody! I might have access to my dream, some really large ficus. They are too big for the owner to use anymore so they asked me if I might be interested in air layering the tops off of them for her this spring. Some of these trees are 20 + inches at the base with alot of intestesting movement. Here's my question. Should I just trunk chop these things and wait for back budding or should I graft to them? My grafting didn't work out too well last summer so I'm not real good at it so it kind of worries me to try it. With the trunk being so large the leaves should look really good eventually. Any help would be appreciated, also, if you have any pics of large ficus bonsai I'd love to see them. Thanks, Ted

Hi Ky,

Try this link http://www.bonsai4me.com/Gallery/galleryvictordan.htm . Some great Ficus bonsai pictures there.

Also check out Jerry Meislik's site. He is the author of a very highly acclaimed book on ficus bonsai and would probably be an essential buy for you.

All the best,

Aaron
