Truly ancient trees-beautiful

Stumbleupon-ed this page. Spectacular and mystical (and inspirational?). Apologies if previously posted.

Read this unfortunately true story on the same page:

"In 1964 a geology student...
...
When his coring tool jammed inside a massive tree, he asked for, and received, permission from the US Forest Service to cut the tree off at 2.4 metres above the ground and keep a horizontal slab for study.
...
Later cores taken closer to ground level by dendrochronologist Don Graybill showed it to be 4,862 years old - the oldest living thing ever discovered."

It would be nice to know the names of those morons at the US Forest Service..and I would love to see them receive a public award for their decision. Naturally, there should be a free supply of rotten tomatos available..

How Stupid Can They Get?

I remember reading about this several years ago. The story hasn't gotten any better with time.

It's unfortunate that such an old tree was cut, but as sad as it is one of these ancients got it hundreds of thousands of ancient trees have been fellled in the pacific northwest.
