Contrary to the lights that Jerry uses, I use regular Fluorescents and my timer is set for 18 hours. I do give my trees a rest for the month of January by not giving them any fertilizer. Their growth continues, but at a slower rate for that month....

Speaking from my limited experience...

I have a number of tropicals that are growing next to south windows on which I removed the screens in the fall to increase overall light.

My tropicals growth slowed during December but are now growing again like crazy. I use no artificial lights at all and have fed regularly throughout the winter with inorganic fertilizer and switched to organic at the beginning of this month.

Both windows that I use are facing south and I keep the plants about 4 inches from the glass. They typically need watering on a daily basis, sometimes every other day when the temps drop. I have noticed no adverse affects although I have no doubt that artificial lighting would increase the rate of growth somewhat.

Will:
What ever works for you is the only thing that counts... I do suspect that the leaves of the different trees might be smaller and the internodes closer together, if you were to give them additional light for anywhere from 10 to 18 hours as described by Jerry and me.

I agree completely and fully plan on artificial lights next winter. I posted this as a control for dormancy effects against yours and Jerry's artificial light setups. Even my trees using only sunlight only experienced a brief dormancy period.

To all those reading, by all means use artificial lights if possible!

I second that. My first winter I didn't use any artificial lighting and my 3 tropical trees did ....ok. Well that is of course except that damn serissa but that's another story. Last winter I got an indoor greenhouse and added some fluorescent grow lights... WOW what a difference. This year I added a second indoor greenhouse and just 3 weeks ago I upgraded one of the greenhouses with a compact high output fluorescent system... Again WOW!! Probably next month I will buy another compact high output setup for the other greenhouse, because since adding it, I am getting growth rates on my ficus that are almost as high as during the summer outside. I'll try to take a pic or 3 tonight of the new setup and post it up in another thread...

BTW 16hrs/day does it for me.
