The online issue looks very good. I subscribed as a "regular" subscription, and look forward to receiving a paper issue, with black and white photos.

Good luck with this endeavour!

Magazines and Morikani

I saw the new magazine on the internet and it was interesting. I dont understand why you would subscribe to it when you can download a free copy off the internet?

I am so happy to hear that Dick Miller is now the curator of the Morikami now, as we went there early this year and the trees were in need of alot of help. We were very disappointed in the collection.

Hi Irene,

FYI there have been several attempts to do a tropical magazine in Florida and they were never entirely successful except for one. The Bonsai Societies of Florida publishes a quarterly magazine. The last issue had articles on Banyan Ficus by Jim Smith and articles by Mary Miller on Calliandra. I heard that Mary is contributing articles to every magazine since there has been a change in editors recently. I also know that Mary once wrote her own Tropical magazine many years ago. If you want a quality magazine on tropicals, try to get ahold of the BSF magazine, they have been in existence for nearly 35 years, and I'm sure they aren't a flash in the pan and will be around for many more years.

Also, I was recently in Puerto Rico for the BCI convention and found out that they are publishing a monthly newsletter about their upcoming convention. The sample newsletter was by David DeGroot on tool sharpening. I think you can still get to the newsletters by going to the convention page on the BSF website www.bonsai-bsf.com.

Thank you very much. I wrote for the BSF magazine for the last 10 years, and edited/published it for the past 4 years.
Now I am doing my own magazine to people who long for tropical species information and various bonsai knowledge, The Gulfstream Journal of Tropical Bonsai. Check it out at http://www.gulfstreambonsai.org.
Not to worry about it being free. People get to love it, then want to have their own handy pocket copy to read at will, and it is well worth the price.

Correction: The magazine can be puchased with almost any credit card–or Paypal on-line, and as of yesterday any one in any country can do the same thing. Too bad about the postage costs, but even that is not too exorbitant.

I found your magazine interesting. I'm not sure, but is the article on using rope to tie branches down, is that a joke or is that for real?
