Trip to Chikugo-En - So. Cal.

Well, based on recommendations recieved here, I stopped into Chikugo-En Bonsai nursery in Gardena, CA this past week. I flew into LAX on Sunday and being thanksgiving week I was unsure of the hours so I decided to call on Monday morning.

Gary answered the phone and said that they are normally closed on Monday and Tuesday, and with the holiday would basically be closed until the following weekend. But after I told him I was in from out of town he said to come on by and he would be happy to open up for me. It was well worth the trip.

The tree's there are beyond words. Everything from rough, immature stock for growing out, to some of the most gorgeous specimens I have ever seen.

I took some photo's of the place which is quite crowded so its hard to see detail, but feel free and take a look.

If you are ever in the Los Angeles area, DEFINITELY stop by Chikugo-En. Gary is incredibly helpful and VERY nice. A great family run business with phenomenal material.

And of course I couldn't leave empty handed!!!!

This nice little Shimpaku 'Kishu' stands about 10" tall, and is roughly 20-25 years old.

I know its got some pretty terrible reverse taper, and the nebari is virtually non-existent, but the character of the trunk won me and my wife (a.k.a. the budget keeper) over. The next step for this tree is a trim, thin, and wire.

COOL............. Gary opened for Joanie, BandBChute and myself when we were there on a Monday. Gary's the best. He's a cross between Mr miyagi and a surfer dude. Gotta love it. Here's one we took a pic of that looks a lot like yours.

Its funny you posted that . . . I saw that very same tree and it was a tough decision between the one you posted and the one I got. The final decision was left to my wife.

Gary is awesome. He told me once about his dirt-bike days. He never wanted to go into bonsai.

He also let Graydon in just before the convention, on a Monday, and Graydon couldn't say enough about his nursery.

My Christmas present is going to come from there... but I won't tell you what it is until I have it in my hands. Don't want someone to go and buy it before I can get there!!!

Mas Ishii is the best grafter in the States, many people say who should know.

I believe it. Gary told me that the tree I purchased was grafted and I am unable to tell. I'm sure if I looked really hard I could see the union, but with the naked eye, even careful inspection doesn't reveal anything.

The Ishi's grafted shimps seem to be the BIG sellers, but I also have one of their grafted dwarf ginkgo and dwarf mulberry trees that I got several years ago. I REALLY like them, and, the dwarf ginkgo is in the ground upsizing. It has done well here in NE Ohio unprotected in the ground now for about 5 years. Very small leaves for a ginkgo. The dwarf mulberry gets lots of berries on it every year.
I saw you question about overwintering on another thread. I overwinter my grafted shimps in my greenhouse(unheated) but my old business partner, who only has a small collection left, has found a great way to overwinter his small Ishi shimps in NE Ohio ( zone 5). He put a small shelf on his living room windowsill ( inside) and he sets them there in winter and pulls the drapes around them at night. They stay ( evidently) at a near perfect winter temp because his do better than mine that are greenhouse grown ( which gets pretty cold).

That's interesting Dale. Are we talking about an old drafty farm house window or a new air tight Anderson Window? I could see mine drying up in one afternoon between the sun and furnace climate. Mines going in my Greenhouse all winter for the first time.
