Question Trimming?!

i have a ficus(too little) and i trimmed up the roots and put it into a bonsai pot and added some of the left over soil it worked out perfect but i havnt done 1 trimming to it yet i have been to much of a chicken too i dont know what to do its a really messy looking tree (its never been trimmed) how do i do it PLEASE HELP!
