bonsaiTALK Hint: Did you know you can double click any bonsai term on this page for its definition?

Question Trident Maples (where to get them?)

I'm interested in finding about 5 trident maples. Looking for nursery stock, not 'finished' bonsai. Though if they've had a little training that would be nice. Where's the cheapest place to order from? I'm in Kentucky. Thanks for any info.

You want cheap or nice? There's a difference. Trident maples can be ordered from a pretty wide range of places. Some are cheap, others are nice. Some are both, considering bonsai training.

I've had luck with Bill Valavanis at Internationalbonsai.com. He sells bundles of a dozen or so seedlings for around $30. They're usually whips that can be pruned hard back at planting to create a forest, or planted out to build trunks. Brent at Evergreengardenworks.com also has nice stock. They both are very capable bonsaiists who know good stock and what to look for.

Thanks. That helps a lot. I suppose that, my budget being what it is, I'd go for cheap over nice. After all, most seem to agree that these trees are pretty malleable, so a not-so-nice seedling still has a lot of potential. I'll check those sources.

Just a thought.... buy a lot less trees and buy better quality trees.
I'm looking to bring to my clubs orphans sale some trees I purchased in the past of lesser quality, that I've tried and tried but...they will be better with someone who feels that quantity is better than quality.

Buy trees that will be worthy of your ability in 5 to 10 years...not that is at your ability level now.
my 2 cents
Jay

I'd strongly recommend Brent at www.evergreengardenworks.com Fantastic stock from someone who knows very well what they are doing.

And the advice to buy fewer nice tree's than more crappy tree's is great advice.
