Trident Maple Seed collecting

After a couple days looking to the sky identifying trees, I found a trident maple tree. My question is when is the best time to pluck these seeds? Is it best to take them directly from the tree or just grab those that fall? Thanks in advance

You will want to get the ones on the ground because they should be properly ripened. Or take your chances with ripeness of those on the tree. But make sure you dry them out before sowing.

Collecting seeds

When the trident seeds start to fly in the late summer is the time to strip the tree of as much seed as you wish to store. Keep these seeds in a dry container in your refrigerator (clear plastic with a tight sealing lid )In the early spring after the last frost or earlier in a cold fraim. Take the amount of seed that you want to start, place in a bowl of hot tap water and allow to cool and soak for three days. Pat dry with a paper towel to make sowing easier. Scatter on top of your soil (do not cover ) because your seed will sprout over the next two years remove seedlings and re sew in the same bed in the following spring. Your seed can last for years ( up to 10 ) in your refrigerator. Befor you know it you will have too many Tridents to play with.

Hey Glenn, My coral bark maple that I planted in my garden last year has seeds this year. Would you be interested in starting some of those?

Cheers, Al

I'm jealous, I love Japanese Maples. Went out and got myself a Bloodgood variety the other week. Going to grow it in the garden and then try and grow some seedlings to eventually turn into Bonsai. I'm not overly happy with the graft on the one I bought though, it's not the most concealed one I have ever seen.

That being said, my mum picked up a Green Laceleaf on Tuesday and the grafting on that one was incredible.
