I forgot where i read that a systemic works best for trident maples. I believe the reason for not using a spray had something to do with damaging the leaves. thanks again

Try a 3 and 1 spray, Ortho for example, if you are worried about mites and fungus. A systemic like merit works well, we have sprayed with it in the past, we are using granules this year. it is not restricted. Don't generally get too many pests on tridents in our neck of the woods. With tridents if you are worried about leaf burn or the plant is too dense to get to the stems where the critters are, then defoliate if otherwise healthy. I would suggest that you take specific pest questions to your local Extension horticulture person or the master gardener volunteers.
