Old Bonsaiman-new pots

I'm finishing up in about 2 months, and I'll be moving back to Tennessee. Either Knoxville or Memphis - know anyone around Williamsburg
Paul, If you move to Memphis you'll definitely want to do your bonsai shopping at Brussels Bonsai, Olive Branch, Missippi instead of eBay. You can pick up , touch and inspect hundreds of any type you are thinking of buying, plus get first hand advice...in person! If you live in Williamsburg, it is WELL WORTH the trip to the National Arboretum in DC to see the national collection, AND....on April 30, May 1&2 the Potomac Bonsai Association is having their annual show there on top of it....and...on top of that, there are 20 great/experienced vendors there in a tent offering you anything you need! National Collection free Vendors free PBA display is $2 donation I think The Richmond group rents a bus to come up for the day on Saturday and eat in China Town when they are done. Regards, Dale P.S. I'm one of the vendors! :>)

thanks, Dale! I know ebay's not ideal, but Williamsburg isn't exactly metro central as far as bonsai goes. >
So, from what you can tell, what do you think about my tree? Have any suggestions? Very Best, Paul |

It's not a bad little tree, has some shape to the trunk and some initial branch possibilities. I think I see an informal upright in there if you want to change the planting angle.
As it is of "questionable" origins you may want to consider taking some time to get to know the tree. You want to assess it's health. What you might do is remove the tree from the pot, gently, to check the condition of the roots- you're not disturbing anything. Note condition of the roots- look for new tips, off smells and what kind of soil. Watch the frequency at which you have to water, how the budding out goes... I think in about June, if the tree appears to be healthy enough you can start to work on structure. If it's really healthy read up on defoliation - tridents are GREAT candidates for this technique... One thing I'll do is sketch the tree- gets you much more intimate with it than a virtual. You can explore different possibilities this way. Gives you something to do during class... ;^) I'm in grad school also... Jim Stone TX |
