Trident Maple Early Budding + Leaves

Hi there folks, well down here in oz its that time of year that its bloody freezing but hthe days are starting to get longer again.

Well, needless to say ive started pruning all my maples, and low and behold i went to my parents house to pick up a few more maples, and the couple of tridents were already totally covered in Buds and some were even throwing out leaves!

will this exhaust the trees? they are only pre bonsai at the moment and i havn't had this problem with a maple before! my BIG trident maple which u just gave a pruning is doing perfect. just barely starting to throw out buds, but the other two already have green leaves sprouting!

they are a bit over grown and totally root bound in 12" pots, would it be ok now to give them a root prune and branch prune??

thanks so much in advance guys!

-Dave

At this point I'd feel something has to be done.
This may sound to be against conventional wisdom but.
I'd root prune it enough to get it out of it root bound state or just pot up to the next size. Nothing major maybe 10-15%.
My luck with doing a top pruning at the same time hasn't been very sucessful IMO. I get too much die back. Prune the top after 4-6 weeks when things have harden off.

G'day Dave, looks to me your tridents are telling you spring is here. Being in Canberra it tends to be a bit colder but i would say go ahead and do the whole root prune and pot thing but shelter the trees from potential frost taking no risks. My tridents are still dormant but the cherry plums are flowering and the leaves are ready to burst. I have been known to clip early leaves to follow the spring timing to suit what i want but you should be pretty safe going with what the trees want. Regards Ash

If there is no danger of frost, then have at it.

thanks heaps for that guys! yeah i think i will go ahead, but there is a fair amount of roots that need to be taken off! so i think i will go ahead and do the roots now and pot them both up. all my jap maples (about 12 of them) are all still dormant as is my big trident, so its kind of weird. ive put all my maples under my pergola now so as to stop and frost settling. its like a big greenhouse in there, and all my figs have been fine (bar the little one that gave in to the bonsai grim reaper lol). So thanks heaps for the info guys! thanks heaps for that Ash!

and only 10-15% off the roots? that means that it would be pretty much like not doing a root prune? i thought tridents can take a big pruning coming into spring, like 50-60% with a little off top? although im sure ive read articles where every brnach has been removed from the whole tree and HEAPS of roots have been taken off? its definately getting warmer now, and the days are getting longer.

would it be the fact that the maples are pot bound that they are shooting early?

thanks so much guys.

BTW the maple in my avatar shot is the one that is still dormant. (obviously that pic was without any branch structure) but its trunk is about 5" diameter, nebari spread is about 12". its the Best tree!
