Trident leafout

Hello, folks. Bob here...near Chicago. I acquired 5 Tridents between about 12 and 18 inches high. All but the tallest are leafing out well but the tallest shows nothing yet. Could it just be a late bloomer? It is from a different nurdery and may have had a cooler winter. I don't know. Any ideas? Thank you. PS. Another newbie.

Tridents don't always pop all at the same time. If it came from a different climate that may explain it. I would not worry just yet. Watch the buds for signs. The scrape test is a bit misleading on tridents since they will show green for months after being dead.

Good luck.

I have some that poped in February (late) and we have a couple of trees that have just popped their first leaves in the past week. I have had them go until the last week of May (in Arkansas) the spring after lots of root work or digging in the fall.

A search on posts by Matt Ouwinga(sp) at IBC might do you some good. He lives in Chicago and seems very heavily interested (and accomplished) in tridents. He seems a nice enough guy that if you'd take a drive over to his place he'd happily tell you all you'd ever want to know about them.

Thanks for the replies. The one not yet in bloom came from a different nursery, although he has had it since last summer, I believe. Some of his also are in full bloom in the greenhouse, and a couple others have little or nothing yet. Interesting. I have no photos of them. I don't think they have any 'personality' yet (way too young). Beside, I would have to figure out how to post pics on this site. I did just buy a nice small (5) grove of hornbeams today though. They need to mature some also.

What is IBS - the place Matt works at? Thanks again all who replied.

RJS,
I have a few tridents that are just starting to push out and others that have been in leaf for a few weeks now. (BTW I'm about 45 minutes west of Chicago too). IBC is a forum Matt frequents, he's a great resource on tridents, and very open to talk about them! Wish you the best!

Matt Ouwinga is a member here as well. ---> http://forum.bonsaitalk.com/members/kaedebonsai/ He's also located in Chicago with some awesome Tridents. The advice he'd offer couldn't get much better since it would be entirely localized to your climate. PM him from here.
