Mike, may I suggest that you obtain (purchase or library) a book, 'Basic Bonsai Design' by David DeGroot. This is an extremely worthwhile small book of minimal expense. It was published by the American Bonsai Society. Mr DeGroot is an artist and teacher and the curator of the Weyerhaeuser Company's Pacific Rim collection in Federal Way Washington, not all that far from you.
Chapter 5, Relating the container to the tree. Chapter 6, selecting the container, size and character.

I have many books but find myself reverting to this one for the answers to many of my questions.

Good Luck
Jay
