Trees New Year

Trees New Year.
Tomorrow, Saturday January 18, is a Jewish Holyday- the New Year of The Trees, at the 15 in the Month of Shvaet in the Jewish calendar.
The tradition is that every person should plant a new tree, that is one of the ways to keep the desert away.
On the roads, there are places that you can stop your car plant a tree and continue on your way.
On Sunday morning, the children and their teachers will go and plant new trees too.
Moreover, for a small amount, like 2$ you can plant a tree thru the internet.

This is also the time to begin repotting, I will start repotting today and tomorrow, next Saturday I will post some photos of the trees that will survive…

To my best knowledge, only in the Jewish tradition there is an Holyday for trees, and I wanted to share it with you - the trees lovers.

Do you have that Internet link, Carmi? Maybe some of us here would be interested in planting a tree or two there!

Regards,

Matt

Hi,
As Matt suggested here is the link for planting trees in Israel by the Keren Kayemeth Leisrael:

http://213.8.77.12/kkl/index.asp

The price for a tree for a person from Israel is 18 NIS, which is like 3.5$, the price for planting a tree form almost anywhere in the world is 18$, and you can choose on the map in which location the tree will be planted.

It is worthwhile to visit the main site of the Keren Kaymet Leisrael which takes care for all the public forests of Israel:

www.kkl.org.il/englishMain.asp

Thank you,

This tradition shoud be adapted through the whole world. What kind of tree do they plant? do they water the trees that get planted in the desert?
now I know where you get all your bonsai trees, you go on monday the day after they plant them and pick.
just kidding....

Big Smile Happy "New Year of the Trees"

Thank you for sharing this with us! What a wonderful concept! I think the closest thing we have is Arbor Day here - but I don't think "planting a tree" per se is as widely practised as you describe.

You stated that you could plant a tree anywhere in the world - so I will plant a tree here in California on Saturday - and re-pot a few bonsai!

Thanks everybody.

Lesley – "Hagcag Samech"!

Bess - "Ealhan, Ealhan"
At first they did the same mistakes as a Bonsai beginners, they had planted tress form all over the world, now they made a lot of agriculture studies, and they have huge nurseries for suitable trees for this area, which by the way is one of the sources for very chip young trees for bonsai.

For the very dry areas they plant various kinds of Acacia, Acacia negevensis, Acacia raddiana, Acacia tortilis, for the mountains the plant Jerusalem Pine-Pinus halepensis, and for the very high mountains Cedrus Libani, they also plant a lot of olives (which as I just learned "Down under" considered as weed), Carob and Quercus calliprinos.

Nobody will be planting any trees outdoors here. My thermometer says -10F, although I was outside to get the newspaper and it didn't feel like that, although there is no wind at all. I'll think about planting trees, though. Nice to think about spring.
