Upset Tree Squirrel Problems

Hello, I am a frequent forum reader but have never posted before. I truly enjoy Bonsaitalk and usually check the sight about every day. I am to the point of almost quitting this wonderful hobby that I love simply because of the critter problems I have encountered.

My problem is with tree squirrels. I live in an area that a family of tree squirrels have taken over. I find them digging major holes in the soil and eating bark. There are many items on the market to control ground squirrels, but not tree squirrels. Experts have told me that once tree squirrels occupy an area, they will stay there regardless. The only deterant is to kill them or trap them. If I had the time I would certainly sit outside of my place with a BB gun and take aim , but I work all day.

I had my trees set out on benches last year so they were very easy for the squirrels to get to, but this year I have the benches set up in a large kennel covered by a shade cloth. I thought the enclosed structure would deter them but they are still getting in and causing problems.

Does anyone have any suggestions for me? I would certainly appreciate it. I am so frustrated

That or give them something else to eat...maybe some cheap seed or acorns AWAY from your trees.

I would suggest taking up archery as a hobby.

I too had some problems with these pesky varmits

I found that blunt tips will not kill but they do give a nice spanking. I very seldom see squirrels around any more.

As a nice added bonus, I can now put 4 arrows into a tennis ball at up to 50 yards. So, if you ever have any rabid tennis balls giving you grief, just give me a shout!

I've had the same problem and have had these thoughts:
-BB gun
-pet (dog/cat)
-pepper (red or black pepper) spread around the trees
-wind chimes
-scarecrow (maybe a fake owl)

Seeing how you are not home during the day, I would suggest one of the live traps. Just put some peanut butter inside, and when you get home you can just pick up the trap, put it in the back of your car and take them one at a time to a new home. I would caution you on one thing though.... DO NOT leave the trap baited and setup overnight. There was a small incedent with a skunk I won't get into that taught that lesson!

You ever see one of those motion sensors hooked up to a sprinkler head?

I'm tempted to get a few to water the cats that venture into my plants.

Adam_ma, I had a good laugh at you expense after reading your run in with the Skunk. The imagination can come up with some funny images.

What exactly is their M.O? Do they tear up the soil and uproot trees? Eat leaves and bark?

If they are messing around in the soil, a liberal dose of cayenne pepper on the soil surface may deter them.

Good luck, and keep us posted!
