Tree problem
Hey guys, its me again. Thanks for your former tips.
I now have two bonsai trees, one very kindly lent to me by a bonsai enthusiast who sells them for charity across the street. The problem is, the one i got first, (purchased from a garden centre) Some of the leaves have gone brown, and eventually they fall off. Others have gone slightly yellow. Most are still green. Some have a strange powdery dry white substance on the leaves, which can be removed by rubbing them gently, or watering them. Any idea what i should do? I remove the borwn leaves occaisionally. Am i watering too much? too little? Too much fertilizer? |

We need to know what kind of tree it is, how long you have had it, whether it is indoors or outdoors, sun or shade (or what proportion of sun and shade), whether you let it dry slightly in between waterings.
The white powder stuff could be a mildew, or it could maybe be the minerals or salts from your water, or a fertilizer that has been used. Joanie |

Its a Japanese Holly, Couldnt say how long ive had it, its about 8-9 inches tall now. It should ideally be kept outside, but because of my living arrangements i have to make do with an open window. The nice man at the garden centre said that this would be absolutely fine. Its an evergreen, so i have realised that some of the leaves are bound to get old and fall off, but its the ones that are near the end of the branches that are worrying me.

Try letting it get a bit drier between waterings and do keep that window open. Maybe the soil is so peaty that it's holding a lot of water in the pot. Hollies need all that acid, but if you repot, add a bunch of grit to the mix (1/3 - 1/2) so it drains faster, and don't let it sit in the drain water. Also, if you've been spraying it a lot, don't, because it'll 'feed' the mildew problem.
