Looks like you've got privet (Ligustrum ) growing in your yard. Yes, they can be used for bonsai. In the spring thru late summer they can be collected chopping the top to a nub and the roots handle severe choppin as well. Best grown with clip and grow.
Can produce a nice tree in a few years. Here's a link for lots of info. http://www.bonsai-bci.com/species/indexgen.html

Looks EXACTLY like the big privet in my back garden. I was 95% sure when I saw the berries, 100% when I saw the leaves.

In this case you have a solid ID and yes it is great material for the creation of bonsai. If I think to snap some pictures today I will post them tomorrow.

privet
yes these privet hedges are a great source of potensai,,,,,they can take any amount of abuse and still give something back,, very frost hardy too, this is just in one growing season ,,collected and then shaped over spring- summer......very quick growth, all in all a very underated bonsai genre!!and compleately FREE!!if you have a back yard hedge full,,Also the small white summer flowers smell divine ,sweet scent .good luck,
