What do you consider a "normal" tree? Most bonsai are simply trees that have been carefully groomed and grown to stay small. For example, a dawn redwood gets extremely big in nature, but may be as small as 24-48" tall as a bonsai. There are many other examples of "normal" trees being cultivated as bonsai. However, there are some species that are considered unsuitable for bonsai due to their growth habits. So, in order to properly answer your question, you must specify a species.
Regards, John

Hi, Icra,
Perhaps this is the sort of thing that you were looking for? http://forum.bonsaitalk.com/showthread.php?t=9011 (That thread details the initial styling of a juniper shrub into some rough semblance of a bonsai.) Best regards, Carl |

Are you talking about making a bonsai from a wild tree found in the ground? Or from a tree that you buy in a nursery? If so, of course. A bonsai is any tree, not just the guy on the corner with a juniper if that is what you a refering to . . .
Please clarify what you mean. |

Hi! You really need to read books about bonsai. Check them out from your library, or buy them on the internet. You can also read a lot on this forum, because people have answered this question over and over.
There are too many things to learn for someone to put them all in one post! Like, do you want to buy a tree from the nursery and make it smaller? Or dig one out from your yard? Both of these things work, but they are different. And if you go back into "User CP" and fill in all of your information, like where you live and how hot and cold it gets there, everyone can help you better. The best part about bonsai is learning all the different ways to do something!! Good luck! Joanie |
