Too Much Rain?

Hi Guys,

is it possible for a maple ( acer palmatum) to get to much rain, as it has rained non stop for 2 days now here in scotland. the tree is planted in akadama, it also seems to have some brown patches on the leaves although not alot, is this to much water ?

It is possible, if you have good drainage, and as long as you don't see any Arcs being built, you should be okay.

You could move it under a overhang, large tree, bench, or other object to prevent it from being rained on untill the weather clears. You could also take some plastic wrap and wrap the pot, tenting the wrap on the trunk, using a twist tie so no water hits the soil.

It's been raining a lot the last couple of weeks here. I haven't done anything for protection for my trees, which should be fine. However, tonight I covered over my cacti and succulents because it's supposed to be all rain all day tomorrow. They've had enough for now.

A couple days of rain should be no problem. If you get four days of rain or more, you might want to take some steps, such as those described above, or perhaps tilting the pots by using a support of some kind (wood block wedge or brick) under one end. That will incline the pot, help overcome surface tension and make the soil drain more rapidly.

Regards,

Matt
