don't many home improvement stores have precut risers for front porch steps and the like? not as custom I understand, if too short one could add legs. just a thought.

Again, I say nice work Music Surf...

And let me repeat what I said in an earlier post "...One suggestion...your bench top pieces should be closer together...if not...it will be a struggle every time you set down a bonsai pot that has feet...".

As soon as you start moving your plants into bonsai pots...with feet...you will wish that you had put those bench top pieces closer together.

However, it's your display bench...what ever floats your baloon.

If you don't care...I guess I shouldn't care.

Bye the way...I hope Irene reads this post...

Pat

Hi Mike ... Pat has a point regarding the spacing of the slats. Why not staple galvanised wire (heavier than chicken wire) over the surface areas, voila problem solved. Then for the next assembly increase the number of slats to reduce the spacing. I really do like what you have produced here.

Just wondering...Has anybody ever used the wooden picnic tables they sell at Lowe's/Home Depot as benches? They are probably not vey good on the eye but wouldn't be a bad idea for the price (about 70 USD) ...Jorge

Since the built posted in the first post cost about $80, might as well build that instead since it looks great.

Since home depot/lowes will cut the wood for you if you don't have tools, then all you need is hammer/nails or drill/screws.

But of course, nearly any bench will work, so I'm sure the picnic tables will be fine.

I just temporarily use some cinder blocks in the yard and leftover wooden planks to build mine.

I made a mistake about the top, and i realized it today. I made marks every 3.5 in not every 7 in, and lined up the left side of each piece. 1.75 in covered, 1.75 in open, and so on. sorry

I actually ordered a few of these benches that Dale recommended, and am very happy with them. The wood shelving unit I built turned out to not be very steady, and after drilling a hole in my thumb, I figured I'd go for something more pre-made. The people there were nice, and you're able to customize them to meet the specs you need. They also assemble/disassemble quite easily.

So thanks again to Dale for the recommendation - you probably spared me from doing any further bodily harm to myself when using power tools!
