Three leafless Serissas
Ear;y this summer I bought three serissa. All of them lost their leaves several weeks ago. I've watered them lightly since then. I have them indoors in a south facing window that gets a lot of light. Two questions:
1) If they leaf out again, will it be next spring or before? 2) Since they are without leaf, should I repot them now?

Barry - This doesn't sound too good for your serissas. In my experience, when a serissa looses all of the leaves it means that that part of the tree has died. Serissas are very fussy especially with light and water and will drop leaves at the slightest change, but usually if strong to begin with they won't drop all the leaves. To see if they are still alive, you should test a few of the branches to see if they just snap off (these are dead) or just bend without breaking (these are alive). If your trees are still alive, don't repot now as they are very stressed out and they will surely die if you do. The only thing you can do now is not over water and keep an eye out for new growth. Good luck! - Wade

Don't have a funeral yet.
Barry, don't give up hope. Question, have you had these in all the time or moved in recently? Did you need heat inside yet, or still running the Ac.
Serrissa will throw all thier leaves when enviromental changes occur, it'll take a few weeks to get some new clothes for the tree, if it's alive still, they are tougher than you think. I am just getting mine in, they have seen many 40-50 nights and some a light frost, and they love it. "Normal watering" bonsai style, for a few weeks,( water as needed), usually if they are killed off by watering issues, the leaves curl, brown drop, if they yellowed a bit, and threw off, then you will probably see new leaves (smaller too) in 3-4 weeks. As much sun as you can, and if possible supplimental florescent, will help new leaf buds pop. Don't be afraid to let it get cool at night. Bill |
