Question Thread Grafting On Blk Pine?

Hello all,

I think the header says it all. I have only seen this technique used on decidous trees, will it work on pines as well? Also, please offer any thoughts on this technique that I may add to the info that I have read. Thanks for your help!

thread grafting

In the 15 years that I have been doing bonsai I have never heard or read an article that used thread grafting as a technique on black pines. The excepted method for grafting new growth on to black pine is by using the technique called cleft grafting. To see this technique I would contact the publisher of Bonsai Today and request the back issues that deal with this technique. Also talk to your local bonsai club to find information on who could teach this technique to you. You may try to find a way to use thread grafting on black pines but my bet is that you will end up being disapointed.

All,

I have tried threading a small seeding onto a larger trunk Blk p. I found that the bark and surrounding tissue around the hole died and shrunk away even with a sealing applied. So by the time the seelding had swelled to the point of contactin the cambium layer there was nothing to graft onto but dead tissue. A difficult and very slow process.

Dont give up on standard grafting on black pine. It is easy and very good results occur in a year or so. \good luck

When thread grafting a pine you would have to take into consideration the size of the hole you need to drill in order to pass the needles through without doing dammage

I have only seen approach grafts done on pines. This works successfully. I'm wondering if cleft grating is the same as approach grafting.
