Theft occurred at Dayton Garden Center
By Kelli Wynn / Dayton Daily News

DAYTON | The bonsai display bench at Pete Kossoudji's home north of Dayton will be bare come Monday.

That’s because on Wednesday morning, the owner of North Dayton Garden Center and Nursery, 1309 Brandt Pike, discovered that five to six of his personal bonsai he keeps at the garden center during winter had been stolen.

Re: Thieves Pilfer Bonsai Plants

Matt.... it is sad that we have in our population individuals with larceny in the hearts. I know these trees were not insured, but that is not the point. Our trees are ours. We put our efforts and a bit of our selves into them. Some are worth a great deal of monetary value.....but all our trees are valued a lot higher than the $ value. If any of us were to lose a personally valued tree, one we have worked on over the years, the last thing we want is the money! WE WANT OUR TREES.

Hopefully all who read this will take a second look at how our own trees are protected!
Sadly......Jay

Re: Thieves Pilfer Bonsai Plants

Generally speaking a thief will only steal what he feels he can easly sell. I know that our local bonsai nursery will only buy from known wholsalers and never from public strangers who just show up with cheap trees. Someone is paying money for these trees. That is why it bothers me when someone in our bonsai comunity says that they have to protece there tree supplyer. I feel that if you have really exelent material you should also be able to offer a realistic petigree, as in who have been the trees previous owners...Just my openion

Re: Thieves Pilfer Bonsai Plants

Sad indeed.

I had three trees along with their pots stolen 2 years ago in the fall. One Trident Maple grove and 2 junipers
I had been training for 15 years. I can't even attempt to tell you how it still feels. I have pictures of them but it did no good. I checked Ebay for months to see if they would try and sell them there. I suspected who stole them. Some TV cable guys from out of town that were subcontracted by the local cable company were on my property 2 days before.

The police wouldn't even question them. I feel lucky now that they didn't take more of my trees.

I wanted to put up razor wire on my fence so if they came back Icould follow the blood trail! The city wouldn't let me.
Appreciate your trees everyday.

Re: Thieves Pilfer Bonsai Plants

Gary,

Could well be. In Atlanta, I lost a gorgeous potted japanese maple - over twenty years in training (few of those by me) the very evening after three furniture delivery guys came to my house to bring a couch. A huge tree, must have weighed 75 pounds in the pot.

What a sick feeling to get up that morning and see that tree missing.

Re: Thieves Pilfer Bonsai Plants

I believe that if I owned bonsai that was valuable enough I would attach an (on star) transmitter to the bottom of the rootball when repotting, then the tree could be tracked world wide. Wouldnt the thief or purchaser of the tree be supprised when the police came knocking on the door.
Well in a perfect world it would work something like that.

DAYTON | Dayton police have recovered two of the five or six bonsai trees stolen from the North Dayton Garden Center and Nursery sometime on Tuesday.

"We got the plants back last night at 10:30 p.m.," Pete Kossoudji, owner of the garden center, said Friday.

The returned plants included a 100-year-old Ficus valued at $2,400, along with a 25-year-old Jade valued at $300.

Re: Thieves Pilfer Bonsai Plants

No kidding, Rip. When my japanese maple was stolen from my Atlanta apartment balcony (not an easy feat, since it weighed about 75 pounds in its pot), the cops said it was "just a college student prank". As if grand larceny is every "just a college student prank..." Most people just don't get it.
