I have seen very good Scots Pine and Austrian Black Pine. I am not familiar with the Yoshino cherry or the other prunus cultivars. I think most of the these would depend on the actual specimen - having an interesting trunk, or shape, or being an old collected specimen for example. I wouldn't go the nursery to by an Eastern White Pine in a 1 gallon container with the intention of making anything from it. Same goes for the magnolia. Both have big leaves and unless there is some other redeeming characteristic, you're probably better off steering clear. A 30-year-old magnolia layer could be very interesting though. So it depends on the actual plant here.

Regards,

Matt

I agree with Matt.

The Andorra Juniper doesn't have very good foliage for bonsai and the plums you mentioned are grafted so you would need to find one with an acceptable graft that isn't too conspicuous which may be hard to find given the fact that they are grafted for fruit trees and not bonsai.

I had a Yashino cherry once a long time ago and it has good flowers but the rest of the year it's kind of blaaa, plus the one I had was small and it doesn't grow very fast and was buggy....

Loblolly pine has long needles as well as the Eastern White pine.

Ok,Thanks guys!

I was going to order the trees from a nurserey catalog, they come in the whip sizes,so you guys probally saved me about 25$.I may give the Yoshino Cherry a whirl tho,if nothing else I can have cool little flowers and get my Last Samurai thing on.The White Pine is already on the way with my Dogwoods so I'll just plant it in a ditch somewhere.Maybe in a 150 years it will still be around.

Stiil wondering about the Blue Rug Juniper tho?I see they have a Lacebark Elm,I wonder if that is the sub-tropical Ulmas Parv. tree. They say the leaf will turn purplish in fall.

If only for the tree/plant descriptions and their usefullness for bonsai.

Oh Yes,I have gotten some nice stuff from him before.Evergreen is going to be one of the main suppliers I use for my Skittles.

I am a member of the Arbor Day Foundation. ,so I get a bit of a discount and free trees when I order thru them. The selction is a little boring in the sales catalog for my zone ,but 1' tall Privets are only.85 each. That aint to shabby!

What is Skittles?,well it is the name for my " still in progress" Asian Maple bonsai garden. My goal is to have a few examples of each Cultv.I am up to about 10 variaties so far,and since they come in every color(even blue)...Taste the rainbow.

I agree with you 100 percent on this will...

Proper selection on the plant in terms of available branches, trunk curbs, deadwood, foliage and projected bonsai style makes the plant a good potential bonsai..
