The Texas State Bonsai Exhibit - John Naka project
As a director of The Texas State Bonsai Exhibit I thought I would create a post about ourselves and the latest fundraising project . Our goal is to further the art and appreciation of bonsai by creating a permanent exhibit here in Austin, Texas. We are an IRS 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation, really one of the few non-profit bonsai exhibits in the nation. Putting together a permanent exhibit has been a goal for which our members have worked very hard, and we try to think of creative ways to raise funds.
As a fundraiser, one of our members, Donna Dobberfuhl (interrnationally collected artist of Sculptural Designs Atelier www.sculpturaldesigns.com ) has created a life-sized sculpture honoring John Naka, titled "Sensei." Donna hand-carved the likeness of John from clay using photographic references, and made a temporary cast of the sculpture in Hydrocal before making a mold and casting the piece in Bronze. It will be a one of a kind piece of art, raffled to the public on May 19, 2007. Donna has generously given her time and talent to the project ensuring that all proceeds gathered will go to the funding of this exhibit. We are trying to spread the word to other bonsai enthusiasts and artists who may wish to take part in this raffle and create a real event while supporting a great cause. Ticket sales through paypal are available at our website www.ttsbe.org The raffle tickets are only $10 each, allowing anyone to be able to participate. It could also be an opportunity for entire clubs to purchase blocks of tickets, so the sculpture can be club-owned. "Sensei" will find it's new home after the drawing, taking place May 19, 2007 (shipping it to anywhere in the world will not be a problem). If you have any questions, feel free to contact me or any of the other directors (listed on our website at www.ttsbe.org ). The bonsai community is a close-knit society who always come together to help each other out. Thanks for taking the time to read about this fund-raising project and our exhibit. Joey McCoy Texas State Bonsai Exhibit, Inc. Enclosed are images of "Sensei" from different angles and another with the artist.

I thought I'd post an update on the Sensei raffle project. The drawing is going to take place soon, on May 19, 2007, but there are still tickets available for those who'd like to take part. Tickets are only $10 each, and can be purchased for an individual or an entire club at www.ttsbe.org through Paypal. This is a one-of-a-kind piece, currently appraised at about $5,000. There never be any reproductions made, so look at it as a way to own an amazing piece of art, to recognize one of leaders of bonsai, or to simply make a donation to a good cause. Remember that all funds will go to The Texas State Bonsai Exhibit and that we're working really hard to put together a permanent exhibit space for all bonsai-lovers to enjoy. This is a worldwide call to help out our non-profit organization and we appreciate everyone's support! The final image of the sculpture was revealed last month, along with a custom-made redwood base which was specifically for this piece. From the artist:
Thank you!

Here are two trees donated last year the exhibit from the estate of a long-time bonsai collector in Houston. They're HUGE in person and have been in cultivation for a very long time. The Ficus retusa is 45x35 inches (114x88 cm) and the Ficus nerifolia is 56x40 inches (142x101 cm). They're currently having the pleasure of the tree-sitting service of MBP Bonsai in Pflugerville just outside of Austin.

Holy cow! Those are great Joey!
Even though they are in terrific hands with Mike, I will sure be glad when they (and all of the other future exhibit trees) have a permanent home. I'll be buying my $10 ticket! Mike |

The TTSBE raffle project concluded today (May 19th, 2007) with the drawing of the winning ticket on the walk of the State Capitol in Austin. Barry Cotton, president of the Japan-America Society of Greater Austin drew the ticket at 1:30 in the afternoon.
And drumroll.. from this international event, the winning ticket holder is... Irene Britton of San Antonio, Tx was announced as the winner of the bronze sculpture Sensei. How ironic is that Irene?! A BIG congradulations to you! Attached is a photo of Mr. Cotton holding the winning ticket at the ceremony today, along with many of the directors of TTSBE. Thank you, everyone who took part in this, in helping out in this raffle and especially those who purchased tickets! The permanent exhibit is something everyone will be able to enjoy, hopefully for generations to come. The entire event was videotaped and will be available to watch on the website shortly: www.ttsbe.org

Thank You!
I am still in shock! Cost of a ticket $10., Clay in the hands of a International Artist $ pricey., Being the winner of the ticket and knowing the Artist $$ Priceless. I have so many emotions running thru me from being the winning ticket holder of such a wonderful one of a kind piece of Art. I want to keep him to myself, but I want to share him with the World also! So I will just have to wait out the roller coaster of these emotions! I do know that at some point he will reside at the permanent Texas Exhibit for all to see! Hubby will be checking into the Legal/Tax part on a donation of this magnitude! Irene
