Tamarind Cutting
I was given this cutting (hehe) about mid growing season this year. It is a cutting from a 20 foot indoor tree that was growing a friends studio. It had gotten too tall and was pushing up the sky light so he chopped it and stuck the pieces against the wall to dispose of later.
Much to his surprise they all sprouted. He stuck them in soil and asked if I would take one. Gladly. What the heck, why not. The growth while I had it outdoors was amazing. It was chopped back, no kidding, two times and was still getting taller. The leader itself was originally as thick as the one on the opposite (right) side. I plan to chop this leader back again next season to just below the area I marked on the picture. The trunk will need some carving. I have seen some tamarinds that were split and carved, so I am sure that carving will be OK....if someone knows otherwise...please speak up. The Trunk is almost five inches in diameter. Obviously no taper, but carving it should take care of this. The tree right now is about 30 inches tall. give or take a few inches. Thoughts? Paul

I think you should let the new leader grow out until it is 2/3 the diameter of the main trunk, then chop it. Otherwise it will look very much like it was chopped for the foreseeable future.
Regards, Matt

I have two tamarinds that I grow indoors. They are pretty hardy trees. I was going to try to start some cuttings. Id like to know what they did to get tehem to grow easily too. I havent tried to root any yet.
