Taking a ficus retusa cutting
I am planning on removing a branch that is about the size of a pencil and trying to get it to root. Do I just dip the cut end in root hormone and sitck in the dirt?

I don't use rooting hormone but it won't hurt. Put the cutting in a container of bonsai soil and enclose in a baggie. Keep out of sun. Moisten the soil as needed and it should root if the plant is healthy.

Ficus would be best in early to mid-summer. With the maple, early summer, after the leaves have been given time to harden off.
Good luck. Jerry

What about taking the ficus cutting now? Its still quite cold here, but the tree is indoors under artificial lights and pushing a LOT of new growth.

Usually if the tree is pushing a LOT of growth it should still root with not problems. Although your best chances of getting it to root would be in early/mid summer as Jerry has said. All depends on how important it is to you weather or not the cutting takes. With that in mind, I have taken cuttings in winter from my retusa's and it may take a month or so for it to strike. In the summer I have had them strike in as little as a week.
