Taking Bonsai on planes?
Hello,
I was just wondering what everyone did when they bought a tree on a trip in the US and was trying to bring it home with you. Also, wondering if there was any restrictions anyone has ever had with sitting a smaller under 13" tree on there lap. (maybe that one prize you couldn't let get mangled in luggage.) What did you do? How did you get it past security? Or what special precautions did you do to hide the plant in a carry on so it could sit on your lap. Would love to hear any stories. |

Re: Taking Bonsai on planes?
A couple years ago, I flew back from Japan with a Japanese Beech. At that time, I didn't have to hide or disguise it at all. Just ran it through X-ray and carried it on. Nowadays, I think you're probably better off getting yourself a sturdy box and tying it to the bottom, running it through as checked baggage.
Here are some Suggestions for Packing and Shipping Bonsai from the bonsaitalk FAQ (because it was outside the US, I had to remove the soil and get a phytosanitary certificate, and I had an import permit)

Re: Taking Bonsai on planes?
This happened last week.
Ultimate deal. A friend of mine was asked to do some grafting of cork bark pine on black pine understock. The deal was they were flying him to Hawaii, he would work two days for them then have the rest of the week to sightsee. The client was picking up the tab for all expenses. The problem. They confiscated his scions and his grafting knives. Needless to say, things are tight right now when it comes to air travel!

Re: Taking Bonsai on planes?
Matt,
I read your article about the long drawn out process of bringing a tree from over sea's. I enjoy all the helpful info it had. I guess my real question had been has anyone had a tree sitting on there lap while in flight (commercial flight of course). Bonsainut, Was he trying to get it on in a carry on bag? Or suit case? I can understand the grafting knife thing after 9/11. |

53 seedlings? What did you do just put them in a large box and check in as luggage?
