Takagi Bonsai Museum!

I ran across the website of the Takagi bonsai museum. This is a very nice place to spend some quality internet time. It's in English

NOTE: OLD POST (LINK IS NOW DEAD)

In case you missed the recent article in the Newsfeed concerning the Takagi Bonsai museum, it's here:

(THIS LINK STILL WORKS as of 6/9/2005)

The museum was closed down not so long ago.

I guess there wasn't enough interest (no wonder that some Japanese artists claim that interest in bonsai is slowly dying in Japan - in the same time it's rising in other parts of the world and more Japanese bonsai artists travel abroad these days).

Maybe they were a victim of their "no photo" policy??

BTW Kazuki made a trip out there awhile back, and had some photos to share:

The Takagi Bonsai Museum in Tokyo closed because of personal problems of Mr. Takagai and also because of the poor air conditions in Tokyo.

However, the Takagi Bonsai Museum opened again in May 2006 on the former grounds of the Chikufu Fu En Bonsai Garden in Tochigi Prefecture about two hours north of Tokyo. This site was the bonsai garden of Susumu Sudo, headmaster of the Keido Shcool of Display. He still teaches and lives on the museum grounds.

The new museum layout is far surperior to the old Tokyo location. The bonsai are outdoors, where they belong, yet they still have indoor areas of formal display (more of them too).

Additionally, the first house erected in Japan for formal bonsai display which was built by Kyuzo Murata, Kyuka-en Bonsai Garden in Omiya was taken down and reconstructed at the new Takagai Bonsai Museum. It's superb!

Although the new location of the Takagi Bonsai Museum is not as convenient for foreign visitors to Tokyo, it is definately worth the extra time to get there.

The new Takagi Bonsai Museum is visited on my bonsai tours to Japan and all members were very impressed, not only with the museum grounds, but the bonsai and the formal displays as well.

Bill

Bill,
Do you know if they intend to still have their annual Japanese pottery competition. I really enjoyed those photos and the pots displayed when there with you.
