Ron,,,,I was surprised to learn that the oldest bald cypress in the world are in North Carolina. Go figure.

That's it Carl, digitally remastered photos, poster size. I can see tremendous potential in them. Out of desperation, I was already thinking that I may have to paint my own painting for my future displays, but your idea is brilliant.

BTW, I have yet to see a Bald Cypress bonsai that successfully evokes the spirit of that magnificent specimen on the first photo. I've seen plenty with apex and triangular shape, but none of them in the naturalistic style.

Imagine that you cut out that tree and place it in a bonsai pot. Then, use Photoshop to "exagerate" the most attractive features 3 or 4 times. That's because the same ratios wouldn't look as good on a miniature scale as they look in nature. You have to distort them to to icrease their visual impact.

Attila,,,There are a couple of artists here creating fantastic flattop bald cypress bonsai. They are just not sharing them with the rest of the world yet. Hopefully that will soon change. I have a dozen or so trees in development in various forms. All are still several years away from being called bonsai. Most are doomed to mediocrity due to bad decisions on my part, but I have my fingers crossed that a few will be worth developing fully over many years. I will try to collect a few more select trees this year and cull the lesser stock as I go.
Last summer I had a chance to have lunch with Vaughn Banting, the godfather of bonsai in Louisiana. He is in very poor health, but his enthusiam for bonsai, particularly native species, is incredible. His biggest wish is to see bald cypress reach it's potential as bonsai. He feels that the surface has barely been scratched when it comes to styling cypress.

Best Regards,

David

I agree fully. I don't think there are too many species on this planet which can beat the B/C as bonsai material. I've seen a few attempts for "flat toppers", but they looked not much more than "attempts".

Thanks again.

Attila,

This bald cypress by Vaughn Banting, part of the Pacific Rim collection, is the closest that I have seen. I like this tree very much.

David,

Banting will get his wish. As artists like yourself master the fundamentals of (neo)classical bonsai and then put in the serious study of nature that is reflected in your photographs, we're going to be seeing some superb work coming out of the American South.

Best regards,
Carl

Edit: Curiously enough, when I posted this tree a while back on
this thread along with a poll, it was decidedly unpopular on the forum relative to both a massive-taper bald cypress and a weeping version. Needless to say it got my vote!
